OLDENBURG’S PALACE GARDENS

The Palace Gardens (Schlossgarten) in Oldenburg form one of the major historical parks in Northern Germany. Stretching over an area of around 16 hectares with great diversity of plant forms and colours, the gardens were created in 1814 by Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig as an English landscape garden.

The wide-ranging lawn areas with giant trees that have grown into picturesque forms, winding paths and running brooks are just as much a part of the park as the exuberant flowerbeds. The rhododendron blossoms especially draw countless visitors every year. Historical buildings such as the Court Gardener’s Lodge, the Tea Pavilion and the Winter House blend harmoniously into the park landscape.

The Palace Gardens have maintained their original appearance, almost unchanged over the 200 years of their existence and still contain some of the original tree population. The gardens were declared a historical monument to be protected in 1978 and thus welcome visitors both as a work of garden art and as a local recreation area.

Under the leitmotif „Your Garden is the World“, seven cultural institutions in Oldenburg, Cloppenburg and Jever are celebrating the 200th birthday of the Palace Gardens this year with a number of events and exhibitions.
